Kadriorg Palace

The Kadriorg Palace and Park is a resplendent summer residence, built by Tsar Peter I in the 18th Century for his empress, Catherine. Italian architect Niccolo Michetti was flown in (business class) from Rome especially, to make sure that the Palace was the gleaming red Ferrari of stately homes - with plenty of baroque splendour, stuccoed ceilings and landscaped gardens all round. If that wasn't a big enough draw for budding tourists amongst you, the Art Museum of Estonia has also set up their foreign branch here and you'll find a great collection of paintings, graphics, sculptures and applied art from Russia and West Europe displayed in the Palace's spacious halls. In case you were wondering about the curious-sounding moniker, 'Kadriorg' means 'Catherine's Valley'.
