This sleek, stylish sushi spot is all about aesthetic. As the sushi rage continues, this food which pleases the palate and the eye has found an appropriately modern and minimal environment to match it; and right on Tallinn's main square. Cool wooden floors, sushi mat wallpaper and plenty of velvet complement an impressive variety of different kinds of sushi and other typical Japanese dishes at Silk. The sunny patio generously provides free entertainment with your meal from the hordes of people going by. For dessert, green tea- or tempura-flavoured ice cream is yours to investigate. The prices are steep and the people upscale, but the trend continues with another Silk sushi location at Navra mnt. 15.

I had dinner twice in there. Found the sushi good, very well presented and prepared in reasonable time, even when the place was busy. Service was chilly but efficient.

We came here four years ago and were impressed by the understated quality of the cuisine and the friendly professionalism of the staff. However, on a visit this month we had an entirely different experience.

I took a photo of my girlfriend and a waitress quickly came over quite aggressively to tell me that photographs were not allowed. I challenged her as to why, the wind was removed from her sails and she seemed embarrassed, explaining the owner doesn't like it. I asked if I could speak to him but he refused. Altogether the service was poor, the staff rude, the tempura soggy and the sushi below the standard of prepacked supermarket fare. Best avoided. Don't bring your camera!
