Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip has unveiled a memorial to Michael Park in a ceremony outside the capital city Tallinn.
The British co-driver, who died in an accident during Rally Great Britain last September, was a hugely popular figure in the country having spent a number of seasons working alongside Estonian driver Markko Martin – the pair competing for Subaru, Ford and Peugeot during their time together in the World Rally Championship.
Martin – who hasn't competed in the WRC since the accident - was among those to attend the unveiling of the large polished metal cube, sponsored by the Estonian Auto Sports Union and sitting by the Baltic Sea outside Tallinn - while Park's family was also present.
"I want you to know that Michael Park was honoured and loved here in Estonia," Ansip during the ceremony. "He was our own hero and we would like to do our best to uphold his memory.
He will be remembered."
Tommi Makinen, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg, Malcolm Wilson and David Lapworth were among the members of the rally community to attend the ceremony. |
