DID YOU KNOW?

A modern city with a medieval heart, Tallinn has made major strides since independence arrived in 1991. One of the most tech-savvy cities in Europe, Estonians are very proud of their forward-thinking, cosmopolitan capital, but Tallinn's true marvel is its historic Old Town (with UNESCO accolades), which captures the medieval era like no other place in the world. Surrounded by an imposing, almost unrivalled city wall, Tallinn was one of the most well-fortified burgs in Europe. Today almost 2km of its medieval wall remain intact and 20 of its 46 towers still stand over cobbled streets, hidden courtyards, and old merchant houses. Within the these fortifications you'll find the lion's share of Tallinn's important sights, as well as many fine restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs, making the Old Town a veritable tourist's dream. Beyond the fairy-tale splendour, spired cathedrals and castle of Toompea you'll find even more evidence for why the city has become such a hot destination for holidaymakers. The leafy district of Kadriorg boasts palaces, parks, a jaw-dropping art museum, golden-age architecture and sandy beaches, while Pirita is the place for people-watching and sunbathing on a summer's day. Add in a booming economy, full calendar of cultural events and manic nightlife and it's no wonder Europeans from all over are flocking to Tallinn!

Despite it's rather innocent name, the Virgins' Tower (Neitsi Torn) was actually used as a prison for prostitutes during the Middle Ages. Like many of the other towers of Tallinn's medieval wall, Virgins' Tower is the subject of many ghost stories, the most famous involving the ghost of a wine-drinking monk who frequents the wine cellar of Virgins' Tower and takes great interest in the activity of the waitresses working in the cafe which now occupies the tower. Virgins' Tower stands in the Danish Kings Garden (Taani Kuninga aed), a place of great significance to Danes for it was here where Daaneborg - the white cross featured on the Danish flag - is said to have fallen from the skies...
